Thanksgiving and reconciliation service is held at the Central Church of the RAF to mark the 80th Anniversary of Operation Chastise.

A Service of Thanksgiving and Commemoration has taken place to mark the 80th Anniversary of Operation Chastise. Aviators from 617 Squadron, past and present, attended the Central Church of the Royal Air Force, St Clement Danes, located in central London. Operation Chastise, commonly known as the Dambusters Raid, was an attack on dams providing water and power to armaments factories in Nazi Germany carried out on the night of 16 May 1943 by 617 Squadron using special “bouncing bombs”. Led by 24-year-old Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the crews included RAF personnel of several nationalities, members of the Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal New Zealand Air Force. 19 Lancaster Bombers departed RAF Scampton on the evening of 16 May 1943 and successfully breached the Mohne and Eder dams while damaging the Sorpe dam.

Wing Commander Guy Penrose Gibson VC DSO* DFC* Victoria Cross was brought to St Clement Danes Church for the commemorative service.

A special occasion had by all at St Clement Danes' Carol Service

Many gathered to enjoy a traditional carol service at St Clement Danes Church, the Central Church of the Royal Air Force.

With the high quality St Clement Danes' professional choir led by Director of Music Simon Over accompanied by the Royal Air Force Salon Orchestra, a special occasion was had by all.

After the service the congregation were treated to the French 75 Cocktail from the St Clement Danes Cocktail Book collection, curated by Hon. Gp Capt Paul Beaver of 601 (County of London) Sqn RAuxAF. The 2nd edition hardback book was launched to help raise funds to restore the steeple and modernise the church.

The service was led by our Resident Chaplain The Reverend Mark Perry; Hon. Gp Capt Sally Bridgeland (Ambassador of St Clement Danes Church) took part in the service and kindly provided the refreshments; photographs are displayed by express permission of John Goodman; the Salon Orchestra played by permission of the Air Force Board of the Defence Council.

    Central Church of the Royal Air Force assists Lord Mayor's Show

    The 694th Lord Mayor of London's Show was assisted by St Clement Danes Church.

    St Clement Danes, the Central Church of the Royal Air Force, assisted the celebratory, colourful, and joyous 694th Lord Mayor of London’s Show on Saturday 12 November 2022.

    Early in the morning preparations were underway to support those in the Lord Mayor’s Procession. From Mansion House to the Royal Courts via St Pauls, the St Clement Danes Team catered for hundreds of Royal Air Force, Army, Royal Navy, Air Cadets, City of London Police, the Pageantmaster, his team and others.

    The Resident Chaplain, Reverend Mark Perry said, “The ‘pomp’ and pageantry of the Show is something to truly celebrate, and the tireless efforts from the whole team at St Clement Danes are warmly valued. Our involvement in the Lord Mayor’s Show is one of many ways in which the Central Church of the Royal Air Force serves its diverse family, sister Services and the public.”

    The Show dates back to the early 13th century, when a desperate King John allowed the City of London to appoint its own Mayor. The King insisted that each newly-elected Mayor should come to Westminster and swear loyalty to the Crown, and the Mayor of London has been making that journey for over 800 years. Around him (and her) grew up the colourful, joyous procession that over the centuries became known as the Lord Mayor’s Show.

    An annual service of remembrance took place at St Clement Danes Church to remember the members of The Royal Air Force who died whilst Prisoners Of War at Sandakan - Ranau, Northern Borneo 1943 - 45.

    Bishop Sarah Mullally visits the Central Church of the RAF and supports its 1941 Appeal

    The Rt Revd and Rt Hon Dame Sarah Mullally DBE, Lord Bishop of London visited St Clement Danes Church, the Central Church of the Royal Air Force during the occasion of her visitation of Westminster Deanery.

    The Bishop of London supports St Clement Danes Church 80th Anniversary 1941 Appeal remarking,

    “Building an inclusive and diverse community should be at the heart of how we want to be as a society, so I pray you will help St Clement Danes raise the funds they require to restore and modernise the church.”

    Eighty years ago, the church was all but destroyed from an incendiary bomb during the Blitz. The Royal Air Force launched a worldwide fundraising campaign to restore St Clement Danes Church. Now, the church needs further work. The Steeple needs restoration, planned expansion of the Crypt to create a community hub, café and washroom facilities, and further community space to ensure St Clement Danes Church welcomes all for generations to come.

    Members from across the Royal Air Force Air Operations gathered at St Clement Danes, the Central Church of the Royal Air Force, to dedicate their floor plaque inserted into the floor of the RAF family's church.

    The Resident Chaplain Reverend Mark Perry said,

    "We have gathered to dedicate the floor plaque of Royal Air Force Air Ops, and to commit its personnel, past, present and future into God’s hands. As we give thanks for his great works, we remember those who have lived and died in his service and in the service of others; we pray for all who suffer through war and are in need; we ask for his help and blessing."

    Readings were made by Flight Sergeant Jonathan Burt-Matthews and  Flying Officer Thomas Goodenough. The wreath was laid by Air Commodore KS Cowieson RAF.
