An Act of Penitence
Let us confess to God the sins and shortcomings of the world: its pride, its selfishness, its greed its evil divisions and hatreds. Let us confess our share in what is wrong, and our failure to seek and establish that peace which God wills for all his children.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned
in thought, word, and deed;
we have not loved you with our whole heart,
we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves.
In your mercy forgive what we have been,
help us to amend what we are,
and direct what we shall be;
that we may do justly, love mercy,
and walk humbly with you, our God;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Then the Chaplain says
Almighty God, have mercy upon us, pardon and deliver us from all our sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and keep us in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Act of Remembrance
Let us remember before God, and commend to his sure keeping those who have died for their country in war, those whom we knew and whose memory we treasure, and all who have lived and died in the service of humanity. Especially we remember those whose names are recorded in the Books of Remembrance in this Church.
They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
we will remember them
We will remember them.
The Last Post
When you go home tell them of us and say
‘For their tomorrow, we gave our today.’
Then the Chaplain says
Almighty and eternal God, from whose love in Christ we cannot be parted either by death or life: hear our prayers and thanksgivings for all whom we remember this day; fulfil in them the purpose of your love; and bring us all, with them, to your eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord
The First Lesson: Isaiah chapter 2 verses 2 to 4
In days to come
the mountain of the Lord’s house
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
and shall be raised above the hills;
all the nations shall stream to it.
Many peoples shall come and say,
‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the house of the God of Jacob;
that he may teach us his ways
and that we may walk in his paths.’
For out of Zion shall go forth instruction,
and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between the nations,
and shall arbitrate for many peoples;
they shall beat their swords into ploughshares,
and their spears into pruning-hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war any more.
The Collect Of The Day: The Third Sunday Before Advent
God our refuge and strength bring near the day when wars shall cease and poverty and pain shall end that earth may know the peace of heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord
The Collect For Peace
O God, who art the author of peace and lover of concord,
in knowledge of whom standeth our eternal life,
whose service is perfect freedom;
defend us thy humble servants in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in thy defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries;
through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Collect For Grace
O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning of this day; defend us in the same with thy mighty power;
and grant that this day we fall into no sin,
neither run into any kind of danger,
but that all our doings may be ordered by thy governance,
to do always that is righteous in thy sight;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Lord is my shepherd : therefore can I lack nothing. He shall feed me in a green pasture : and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort. He shall convert my soul : and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness, for his Name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil : for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me.
Thou shalt prepare a table before me against them that trouble me : thou hast anointed my head with oil, and my cup shall be full.
Surely thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life : and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son; and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
The Prayers of Intercession
For the peace of the world:
Almighty God, from whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed: kindle, we pray, in the hearts of all people the true love of peace, and guide with thy pure and peaceable wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth, especially Our Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth that in tranquillity your kingdom may go forward, till the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
For the Armed Forces of the Crown:
Almighty God, stretch forth your mighty arm to strengthen and protect all who serve in the Armed Forces of the Crown, especially in the Royal Air Force; grant that meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline, loyalty and discretion, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace; to the honour of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
For the victims of war:
God of love, whose compassion never fails;
we bring before you
the griefs and perils of peoples and nations;
the necessities of the homeless;
the helplessness of the aged and weak;
the sighings of prisoners;
the pains of the sick and injured;
the sorrow of the bereaved.
Comfort and relieve them, O merciful Father, according to their needs; for the sake of thy Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen. (St Anselm, 1033-1109)
For social justice and responsibility:
Eternal God, in whose perfect realm no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness, and no strength known but the strength of love: so guide and inspire the work of those who seek your kingdom, that all your people may find their security in that love which casts out fear, and in the fellowship revealed to us in Jesus Christ our Saviour.
All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.
God grant to the living, grace; to the departed, rest; to the Church, the Queen, the Commonwealth, and all people, peace and concord; and to us and all his servants, life everlasting; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always.
